It’s the calm before the storm in Howell Township.
About 50 snowplows are being loaded with salt at the Department of Public Works. It’s the largest town in Monmouth County, with more than 400 road miles that will need to be treated. They just had a large salt delivery Tuesday morning to replenish after the storm a few days ago.
Joe Layton, Howell’s deputy director of Public Works, said crews plan on getting that salt down before the snow starts falling because they think it’s the type of snow that’s going to stick on the roadways. They also have several contractors on call, just in case they need them.
Crews are treating this storm a bit differently than the last one, which was more of an ice storm. This storm will bring heavier, overnight snow.
“The problem is with big storms is making sure everybody gets to rest and they’re able to get a little downtime in between because when you go 24 to 48 hours, it’s stressful. It’s monotonous,” said Layton.
Crews plan on being out early Wednesday morning as well to salt and plow once again. They’re asking residents to please be patient and mindful.
“Even though we salt today, tomorrow might bring another problem with bridges and overpasses we have to salt as well,” said Layton. “It’s not just a one day event. Sometimes it’s a couple days.”
Residents were asked to park in their driveways and not on the street where possible.
