A teen police officer who was on the job for nine months delivered a baby on the floor of a Holmdel couple’s home.
On Wednesday, the Grevenitz family and Holmdel police officers got to see each other for the first time since they helped bring Lily Rue into the world on March 16.
Officer Brendon Bernard was first on the scene.
"This job is something I wanted to do I knew there was going to be the crazy stuff to expect it felt surreal," he says.
Lily Rue is the Grevenitz's second child, but they never thought they'd be delivering their daughter at home and by police officers.
"I’m thankful for the town we live in and the police the EMS/EMT everyone who came out and helped us. It happened how it was supposed to happen," said mother Nicole Grevenitz.
The entire ordeal from Nicole’s first contraction to delivery took 30 minutes.
Officer Brendon Bernard, 19, has been on the force for nine months and was first on the scene.
He was then joined by Officer Rich Enzerillo who has been with the Holmdel police department for three years.
This was the first delivery for both officers.
"It happened to fast we just relied on our training and instincts. When baby came out and she was laying on mom’s chest, it was such a beautiful" experience, Enzerillo said.
At 6:16 a.m., on the floor of the Grevenitz's Holmdel home, a baby girl, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces, was born.
Officer Bernard, whose mom is a registered nurse, gave him tips on baby deliveries in the past and had the honor of catching her.
"Once that first scream and cry came out it, was like the weight off the shoulders there, and that’s when I really felt the beauty of it all just sink in," Bernard said.
