A unique escargot challenge in Scarsdale is raising awareness about Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy, or SUDEP, in honor of 10-year-old Mark Shaparin, who passed away last April.
It was only his second known seizure.
His parents launched the challenge, encouraging social media users to try one of Mark's favorite foods while sharing a SUDEP fact. "I happen to be a physician, my wife's a medical assistant. None of our friends had ever heard of this, lay people didn't know about this...and they should know because it's a real risk for anybody with epilepsy or any sort of seizure disorder," said Mark's father.
This Saturday, Mark's parents will host an in-person fundraiser with escargot and candy escargot at Wayside Cottage from 3 to 7 p.m.
The event aims to raise money for the Mark Shaparin Foundation.
