The Fairfield Fire Department shared safety tips for handling fire grills, fireworks and more during the summer holidays.

"Really the most important advice is to make sure your grill is clean before you cook with it. Most grills have an area underneath them where grease and particulates build up," said Lt. Robert Smith Jr.

Once the grill is cleaned, he said people should make sure it is placed somewhere with plenty of space and a decent distance away from their house.

Lt. Smith Jr. said if flames get too out of control on the grill it is important to remain calm.

"Shut the grill off, shut the gas off, make sure the top is closed, and call 911," said Lt. Smith Jr.

He said when dealing with fireworks, people should choose legally approved fireworks.

"Fourth of July is one of the busiest days of the emergency room because people are using illegal fireworks and they create a lot of harm to themselves and to their property," said Lt. Smith.

He said people could avoid a trip to the emergency by staying alert and aware.

"You don't want them in your hand and away from things that can burn like a home, piles of mulch," said Lt. Smith Jr.

The fire department said the safest way to enjoy fireworks is by going to a professional fireworks display.

The Town of Fairfield will be having its display on July 6.
