East Elementary School in Long Beach has been crowned this month's state math champions.
The elementary school correctly answered more than 44,000 questions to secure a first-place win in the Prodigy State Challenge math competition.
This is the school's first victory in the prestigious game-based math contest.
Last year, East Elementary was in danger of closing because of low enrollment and budget cuts.
The administration tells News 12 that last month the Board of Education informed the school that it will stay open.
"We fought really hard to keep the school open. This is great moment for us. We saved our school, and we won this month's math contest," explained Joann Kapp, president of the Parent Teacher Association.
The Long Beach school is gearing to take part in the nationwide final competition in May.
The grand prize is $100,000
