The city’s Department of Design and Construction is leading a close to $15 million project in Hunts Point. The plan is to reconfigure Del Valle Square to make the area more accessible for pedestrians, bikers, and drivers.
Tom Foley, the commissioner for the DDC, tells News 12 that there were concerns about pedestrian safety. Illegal U-turns are common in the area, so this project plans to make the entire area more safe.
DDC is reconfiguring bus and bike lanes, adding traffic calming measures like new traffic signals and lights, and adding a new plaza above the Hunts Point train station.
The plaza will feature pavement, landscaping, and seating for the public to enjoy.
“I think to have a place like this for people to come have their lunch, grab a coffee, sit down, bring the kids in - it has a presence. It’s a soothing factor here in a really busy area to come in and really enjoy the square,” Foley said.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
