A renewed push to reopen the former Indian Point nuclear power plant is drawing strong reactions from state and local leaders across Westchester County.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Rep. Mike Lawler visited the shuttered Buchanan facility Friday, calling for the plant to be brought back online. Indian Point, once a major source of electricity for the region, closed about five years ago amid longstanding safety and environmental concerns.

Supporters say reopening the plant could help ease energy costs and strengthen the power grid. Lawler said restoring operations would help lower energy bills for New Yorkers as many households face high utility costs.

But the proposal faces firm opposition from local officials. Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said he does not support reopening the plant, pointing to New York’s broader energy strategy, which emphasizes renewable and alternative power sources.

Indian Point operated for decades before its closure, supplying power to millions of residents. Any move to restart the plant would face regulatory hurdles, political resistance and public scrutiny.
