A Cranbury Township man filed a lawsuit to stop the township from taking his farm through eminent domain.

The property along South River Road is owned by Andy Henry and has been in his family since 1850.

It’s a 21-acre parcel, which is primarily used as a cattle farm.

In April, Henry was informed it was being targeted by township officials who wanted it to use for an affordable housing complex.

The township recently amended its original offer and suggested taking only half of the property.

Henry said he has no interest and can’t understand why they’d want the land for residential use when it’s zoned for industrial and surrounded by warehouses.

“They’re going to isolate people out here in what’s basically a separate town. A few hundred people walled off from the town. I can’t understand that because I’ve looked at existing housing in Cranbury and it’s well integrated in the community,” said Henry.

Henry says warehouse developers have been offering to buy it.

Two years ago, he says he turned down a $30 million offer to sell.

So far, the township has not said if it is considering any other properties.

Officials have offered no comment on the lawsuit.
