The fate of the Nassau Coliseum once again hangs in the balance. Yeah, the company behind the multi-billion dollar plan to bring a casino and resort says it's no longer pursuing the plan. News 12's Logan Crawford is at the Coliseum right now, and Logan, what happens next here? Well, Joe, for now there will be no casino built here at the Nassau Coliseum, at least not by the resort company Las Vegas Sands, but the Nassau County Executive says they will still try to get something developed here. Las Vegas Sands has announced it is no longer pursuing a license to build a casino and resort at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. How many casinos do you need? The resort company says the potential legalization of online gambling hurting their returns is the reason for backing out. As we've reported, critics pushed back against the casino, citing potential impacts to traffic and the environment. Sands draft. An impact statement called for an expansion of the Meadowbrook Parkway to handle increased traffic and adding a 4th lane in some areas. I could not be more pleased. It's it's kind of everything we've been working towards. The battle is won. The war may not be won yet. News 12 reached out to unions who had supported the project, saying it would create jobs. No one agreed to speak with us tonight on camera. Sands says they are trying to find another company to take over the bid for the casino license, and a spokesperson for the Nassau County Executive says there is strong interest from gaming organizations which have been in confidential discussions with Nassau County. The Say no to the casino Civic Group says they would like to see something else developed here. We've begged the unions all along, build something better here. We're not anti-development. Nassau County says it expects to quote crystallize within the next 30 days whether or not to entertain a casino component or develop the site without one in Uniondale, Nassau County, Logan Crawford, News 12.
