Councilman Restler calls for crackdown on illegally parked vehicles in Downtown Brooklyn
Councilman Lincoln Restler is calling for the city to crack down on illegally parked cars in Downtown Brooklyn, some of them with government placards or phony ones.
“Every single one of these cars has either a placard in it of a city worker where they park their personal vehicle in the middle of the street, or they put a fake placard in their car. It's hard. You know, it's hard to find parking. These are tough jobs, but you can't park illegally and there has to be accountability for everyone not to be one set of rules that applies to all of us, city workers, civilians, all the same,” said Restler.
News 12 was on Adams Street, one of the areas listed in the study, and saw traffic agents handing out tickets and towing cars with NYPD placards, signs with various city agencies, and more. It's steps away from the Kings County Courthouse. Councilman Restler says court personnel are given 180 parking spots. Residents like Jean Longmore thing everyone should be held accountable equally.
"If it's illegal, it's illegal," said Longmore.
But she also says parking in the neighborhood is very difficult.
Councilman Restler says he'd like to see incentivization for some of the city agencies and workers to take mass transit.
He is also calling on the City Council to pass legislation that would revoke some of the placards and prohibit the issuing of them.
