A community prayer was held in Fordham to remember the 17 victims who died in the Twin Parks fire three years ago.
A night of remembrance and prayer took place as the community came together in Fordham to honor the victims.
Haji Dukaray says prayer is healing.
"The emotions are still very raw," said Dukaray.
Seventeen people went to sleep for the last time on Jan. 8, 2022, only to be awoken by an overnight fire that raged through the Twin Parks North apartment building. Five of the victims were members of Dukaray's family.
"Unfortunately, every one of our family members was lost," said Dukaray.
In the years since, he has come to his local masjid to find solace from the overwhelming grief.
"We lost five people in our family, but we feel like we gained millions after this whole thing based on the support, we are getting from everybody," said Dukaray.
Dukaray is leaning on faith leaders, like Iman Musa Kubba, and other interfaith leaders in the community.
"We will never forget them, we will never stop praying for them," said Iman Musa Kubba.
While the community is forever changed, Dukaray says it is not broken.
"The most important thing to us when you leave what did you leave behind us, did you leave a legacy, is there anything that you left that is going to benefit people, we're hoping what happened to us the tragedy, the loss that our family had, would benefit other people," said Dukaray.
