Gov. Lamont to deliver State of the State address as lawmakers return to Hartford
2ds agoState Sen. Herron Gaston said Thursday he will be vice chairman of a new poverty task force designed to address homelessness and other issues relating to poverty in Connecticut.
"It's time we sat down and focused on homelessness and factors that cause it -- because we are losing too many of our brothers and sisters to the streets," Gaston said.
Laura Wilimczyk, 49, says she has been homeless in Bridgeport for the past 90 days.
"I'm glad they're trying to do something about homelessness with this new poverty task force -- because it's very difficult trying to get back on your feet when you're living on the street," Wilimczyk said.
Gaston said the panel will study areas such as Bridgeport where there is "concentrated poverty."
"We plan to meet with individuals who are unhoused to get their input - an important step in trying to address
and reduce homelessness in our state," Gaston said.
