A principal in Maplewood who was previously accused of assaulting a Columbia High School student will now face a simple assault charge after a grand jury declined to indict him just a few weeks ago.
Essex County prosecutors announced on Tuesday that a downgraded charge of simple assault for Frank Sanchez will be referred to the municipal court. If found guilty, Sanchez could face six months in jail or a fine.
Dr. Kevin Gilbert, the acting superintendent of the South Orange and Maplewood School District, said in a statement on June 13 that many families and students are looking forward to welcoming Sanchez back to Columbia High School and the South Orange and Maplewood School District community.
