3ds agoWhile school is out for the summer, teachers, students and politicians still have education on their minds and are demanding change.
Those demanding change gathered in Bushwick on Friday at I.S. 347 to raise their concerns – mainly, removing the principal of the school.
“All we see here is retaliation, we see abuse, we see intimidation,” said substitute teacher Jaritza Soler. “We’re not going to stand for it. We will fight.”
On June 18, members of the United Federation of Teachers took a vote of no confidence concerning the leadership of I.S. 347 principal Nevya Rivera. Of the 39 voting members, 21 voted no confidence.
Educators say that the school has become a toxic environment and is impacting the students. Two students entering the eighth grade this fall say they’re not sure if they want to return to the school next year.
“I don’t see why I should stay,” said student Madison Rivera. “No, if things stay this way I’m not coming back.”
Assembly Member Maritza Davila says she has reached out to the superintendent of the district with the teachers’ concerns and was met with hostility.
The adults and children at Friday’s rally say they hope their voices will reach NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks and Mayor Eric Adams to enact change.
News 12 has reached out to the Department of Education for a statement and is awaiting a response.
