WEEKEND SNOWSTORM UPDATE: News 12 is officially forecasting the highest snowfall since the January 29, 2022 blizzard on Long Island Sunday into Monday. Plan for major travel impacts Sunday into early next week. The snow and icy ground will not melt much at all through next week either with high temperatures staying well below freezing through all of next week.
SNOW TOTALS: Plan for anywhere from 8 to 14 inches of snow. The lower end will be seen if there is more mixing, while the higher end will be seen if mixing is limited or nonexistent.
WHAT'S NEW: Winter storm watches are posted for all of Long Island. These come from the National Weather Service and will be converted to winter storm warnings as we get closer to the storm. A cold weather advisory is posted for all of Long Island for dangerous cold Friday night through Saturday morning. Wind chills can be around -5 to -15 degrees! Please limit exposure to the cold during this time and dress in layers. We also now have higher confidence in storm progression and snow totals.
WEATHER LEADING UP TO THE STORM: I hope you enjoyed Thursday's beautiful weather with high temperatures well into the 40s because it could be weeks before it feels that nice again. Friday will look nice with high temperatures in the 30s, but it will be a bit windy and feel more like the 20s during the afternoon. Our next round of Arctic air arrives into Friday evening and will be hanging around for awhile. Saturday will be another nice looking day, but it will feel absolutely frigid.
WHAT DO WE KNOW? A major winter storm will be impacting Long Island, starting after around 6 a.m. Sunday. Snow will stick immediately and pick up in intensity through the day. This will cause dangerous travel by mid-morning on Sunday.
WHAT DON'T WE KNOW? There is still some uncertainty in the chance for mixing with sleet, freezing rain and potentially plain rain Sunday evening. This would keep us on the lower end of our snow totals range.
WHEN WILL WE KNOW MORE? There will be slight adjustments to forecast track and snow totals Friday and Saturday as better, newer information comes in. The exact extent of any mixing will only be determined once the storm is underway.
