Commuters in Brooklyn Heights are facing a rough start to the week after a massive awning collapse shut down the Clark Street subway station.
Video posted online shows the moment a 15‑by‑20-foot concrete and steel awning came crashing down onto the sidewalk around 7 a.m. Sunday. The Department of Buildings says the steel beams holding it up were completely rusted out.
The awning is part of the historic St. George Hotel, which opened more than 100 years ago. Council Member Lincoln Restler says the private landlord, Educational Housing Services NYC, is responsible for maintaining the subway entrance.
No one was hurt, but when city inspectors checked the other entrance on Clark Street hours later, they found the same safety problems. Both entrances are now closed, and the 2 and 3 trains are skipping Clark Street in both directions.
Neighbors say they’re stunned to see a piece of the neighborhood’s history come down.
"It's just kind of stunning," one neighbor told News 12. "This building is a landmark… so to see a piece of iconography come down—it's just wild."
For now, riders are being told to use the Borough Hall station instead. There’s no timeline yet for when Clark Street will reopen.
