We are expecting a lull in the rainfall this afternoon with nothing more than spotty light rain for the evening commute. Periods of steady rain return this evening and last through the overnight. Some heavier bursts are possible around midnight before the rain gradually tapers off toward daybreak Friday. Most of the day Friday should end up mainly dry, although clouds will likely linger.
Because the total rainfall from Thursday morning and Thursday night could total around 1 to 1.5 inches, some minor flooding is possible tonight, especially in places where water tends to collect. This includes streets with poor drainage, low-lying areas, and spots where storm drains are clogged. Widespread flooding is not expected, but drivers should watch for ponding on roads during heavier rain tonight.
Temperatures in New York City will stay above freezing, so all precipitation in the city will fall as rain. A brief period of freezing rain is only a very low possibility well north of the city and is not expected to impact the NYC metro area.
Looking ahead to the weekend, conditions gradually improve. Saturday will start cool and mostly cloudy, but temperatures will begin to rise later in the day. A few scattered showers are possible Saturday night as a front passes through, but rainfall amounts should be light.
A noticeable warming trend arrives Sunday and continues into early next week. High temperatures could reach the low 60s by Sunday. This would be the first 60-degree day in the area since early November. By the middle of next week, some inland areas near the city could even see temperatures approach the upper 60s or low 70s, while coastal areas stay cooler. We do see a cool down towards the end of next week so enjoy the mild stretch.
