A husband and wife were killed in an early morning fire inside a North Bergen senior citizen apartment complex, according to officials.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office says that the Arson Task Force is investigating but that no foul play is suspected.
Officials say the fire broke out on the 10th floor of the Collum Towers just after 1 a.m. Two people died in the fire – 88-year-old Reynaldo Tatis and 72-year-old Miriam Tatis.
"This is a tragic event we’ve had to live through. We've lost neighbors. A lot of people have been displaced, but at the same time, I commend our first responders and all those who stepped forward to help us,” says Mayor Nicholas Sacco. "Nothing takes away the pain and suffering that goes on here now."
The American Red Cross was on the scene to help the 27 displaced residents.
“Right now, thankful that so many people were picked up by their families and loved ones. That doesn't always happen as quickly as it did here in this situation,” says Sheri Ferreira, of the Red Cross. “So, that was great, and we're just providing emotional support and care. It’s always a shock when this happens.”
Two police officers were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to officials, but are expected to be OK.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
