Former Islander Stanley Cup winner Bryan Trottier stood inside Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park Thursday and smiled.
"This place has a lot of Clarkie in it," said Trottier.
He was referring to the new New York Islanders Clark Gillies media room that was unveiled at the house after months of planning and work.
The room is named for former Islanders Stanley Cup champ Clark Gillies, who worked with Ronald McDonald House for years. It features Gillies' jersey on the wall and many photos of him, too.
The room is located on the second floor and will provide the families who use the house with another room in which to relax.
"Everything is at their fingertips in this space," said Matt Campo, the CEO of Ronald McDonald House in New York.
The room features a video game system, big screen TV, a computer, board games, a large table featuring an Islanders logo, couches, board games and is lots of Islanders photos and memorabilia.
"Clark would be proud. It's just great to see this room representing the joy he had and I hope it brings a lot of joy for the families," said Trottier.
"Clark always asked what people were going through. Some of the challenges he had in his life made him empathetic to kids," said Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky. "So, Clark really helped us understand what the Islanders mission should be in the community."
Families use Ronald McDonald House when loved ones are battling illnesses, mostly at nearby Cohen Children's Medical Center. The house gives them a place to stay and a place to take their minds off treatments.
"Yes, we know it's tough but we hope they have smiles in this room and when they go back into the battle they have renewed energy," said Trottier.
The media room will be open around the clock for all families in the house.
