22h agoLast week we put e-scooter efficiency to the test. This week we spoke to an expert and residents about whether they feel safe on the scooters.
The overall consensus was that the scooters aren't the problem -- it's the people who drive them.
The city says scooters are supposed to be ridden in bike lanes, and in the street following all traffic rules. However, many people ride on the sidewalk as well.
In 2019, Jessica Cicchino, senior vice president of research at IIHS, did a study looking at injured e-scooter rides in Washington D.C. She told News 12 her findings concluded most injuries were caused while on the sidewalk.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends the following to practice safe riding:
- Wear a helmet
- Check that all vehicle parts are working (brakes, bell, etc)
- See and be seen
