A 36-year-old woman is raped in her Norwood home early Sunday morning, police say.
Police say the rape happened on Sunday morning at 5 a.m.in the area of East Gun Hill Road and Putnam Place.
Officials say the rape took place in a Norwood building where the 36-year-old woman was grabbed by the neck by a man she didn't know, then he sexually assaulted her. Afterwards, he stole her belongings and cash. The woman was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx. She's expected to be OK physically.
NYPD data shows that rapes are up more than 7% in The Bronx. This time last year there were 479 incidents reported, to date there are about 518.
Advocates that spoke with News 12 about these spikes say numbers have increased substantially due to the "Rape is Rape" act passed in 2024 that broadened the definition of rape to include all forms of non-consensual contact.
Police say the man responsible is still out there - if you recognize him, you're urged to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
