The Williamsburg community is in shock after a massive fire tore through a three-story home late Saturday night, displacing at least 10 families and injuring three firefighters and one civilian.
The fire spread quickly, impacting nearby buildings and destroying a pharmacy and two restaurants located on the ground floor.
The Department of Environmental Protection says the building owners hired licensed asbestos contractors to safely clean and remove the debris, as well as conduct air monitoring.
An active FDNY and NYPD presence remained at the scene on Monday.
"It’s a sad situation," said Matthew McClain, a former pharmacy patron. "My family and I use the City Chemist all the time. It’s sad to see that. And for the families that live in the apartments, it’s a tough situation. I feel really bad for them."
