As gas prices continue to skyrocket, President Donald Trump says he's in favor of suspending the federal gas tax to help ease the burden on drivers.
But exactly how much would drivers save, and when would they start seeing lower prices?
"To fill up my Lexus, it's $105... $100!" says Jessica Edward, of Norwalk. "What are we doing right now?"
The federal gas tax accounts for 18 cents on every gallon of gas and about 25 cents for each gallon of diesel fuel.
The president would need congressional approval to suspend it.
"I would love to save on every gallon of gas if it were an option," says Ta'tiyana Houser, of Bridgeport.
Michael J. Fox, of GASDA, Inc., says drivers would see the price difference in as soon as a few days if it were to go through.
"It probably will be more than 18 cents," Fox says. "I say you'll see about 20- to 22-cent reductions."
But not everyone is thrilled.
With the average price for a gallon right now in Connecticut at $4.62 and climbing, does 20 cents per gallon really make a difference?
"I don't think so," says Michael Cribb, of Norwalk. "It won't help at all."
Funds from the federal gas tax go toward the Highway Trust Fund, which helps maintain and repair roadways, and fund mass transit projects.
Suspending the federal gas tax for a few months would cost the federal government billions.
"I'm not worried about a lack of funding," Fox says, "I'm worried about when it comes back, it comes back higher to make up the difference."
"With the money going towards highways and road projects," says Matthew Sarcinella, of Norwalk, "I'd rather pay 20 cents extra a gallon for a smooth ride, and save myself from the chiropractor a little bit."
