Some Westbury High School students saw the musical "Hamilton" Wednesday as part of The Gilder Lehrman Institute’s “Hamilton Education Program” or “EduHam.”
They first learned about the Founding Era and then created performance pieces, which could be songs, poems, scenes or more.
Jim Basker, president of The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, described it as “their ticket to the show.”
“'Hamilton' is the best thing to happen to American theater and American education, I think, in my lifetime," he said. "To have these kids excited about the Founding Era, which many people think of as these dusty old guys with wigs marching around and saying pompous things, these kids see the Founding Era as something they can relate to, that’s inclusive, where young people like them were fighting a war for independence, a war for ideas and coming out victors, creating the country.” '
Basker added that it was a "very patriotic show that gets kids excited about personal ambitions.”
The program is available to students from Title I-eligible schools.
Tickets are only $10 apiece.
Following the show, students heard from members of the cast, including Trey Curtis, who plays Alexander Hamilton.
The cast members answered questions and shared advice.
“I was excited for every single song," said Westbury High School student Samantha Jones.
Jaslin Lira described it as a “great experience” and “great opportunity.”
