NFA teacher attacked during student 'mental health episode,' district says

News 12 received multiple calls, emails, and messages about the incident Wednesday morning from people who said the teacher was struck at least six times with a metal water bottle in the face and throat.

A teacher at Newburgh Free Academy was assaulted by a student in their classroom on the main campus Wednesday morning in an attack requiring emergency medical care.
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District revealed the information in a message to parents indicating the student attacker experienced a “mental health episode,” and that City of Newburgh police and an ambulance were called to assist the teacher.
News 12 received multiple calls, emails, and messages about the incident Wednesday morning from people who said the teacher was struck at least six times with a metal water bottle in the face and throat.
We reached out to the district to confirm this information but have not received a response.
According to the district’s parent message, the student involved will face disciplinary action and possible criminal charges.
“I want to assure you that the safety and well-being of our staff and students are always our top priority,“ the statement read. “School and district administrators are taking this matter very seriously and I’ve already taken immediate steps to address the situation.”
Administration said in the parent letter they are also providing support to those who witnessed the incident.
News 12 has reached out to City of Newburgh police for additional information.
The teacher’s condition is currently unknown.
