An important replica of American history and reminder of those who fought for our freedom is in our area this week.
A trailer carrying the Wall That Heals will be on display in Bridgeport for the rest of the week. It's three quarters the size of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington.
The wall lists the names of the 58,000 Americans who died in that war. It was at
Sherwood Island State Park in Westport Tuesday and also made a stop in downtown Fairfield. The wall will be on display at Veterans Memorial Park starting Thursday through Sunday. Crews will be setting up Wednesday.
It's a chance for those who can't get to Washington to see it.
"Everybody should have access to the remembrance of those who went before us and paid the ultimate sacrifice. Everybody should have access to that I think the Wall that heals is a perfect way to express those feelings for those who went before us and share the history of our wars," said U.S. Army veterans Edward Rivera.
"It's a healing process especially for the veterans that were treated so bad when they came in, when they got home from Vietnam in the 60s and the 70s which was absolutely terrible. It gives them a chance to come in and heal, heal their wounds," said Brian Turco with the National Association of Naval Veterans.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund started the Wall of Healing back in 1996 and it has travelled all over the country. Last year the exhibit was on the road for nearly 18,000 miles and visited 32 communities across the country.
