A great weather forecast combined with the holiday week will mean a lot of extra boat traffic at the popular spots along the Jersey Shore.
News 12 rode along with Sea Tow Central New Jersey on Monday, which will keep a close watch on the Barnegat Bay for the expected busy Fourth of July celebrations.
“Chaos!” is how Captain Walt Bohn predicts Barnegat Bay will look by the end of the week.
The volunteer firefighter from Pennsylvania traded the hills of the Philadelphia suburbs for a career on the bay.
“You don't have enough water on the boat. Listen if something happens. Always have a plan. Have a case of water. Keep it on the boat,” said Bohn, of Sea Tow Central New Jersey.
He recommends bringing extra life jackets for those unexpected guests you may pick up along the way.
Bohn says two mistakes lead to the majority of incidents.
“Speed and not knowing where you're going. You put those two together creates all kinds of problems,” he said. Staying in the channels and knowing the depth of the water will prevent running aground.
Bohn expects thousands of watercraft out there by the Fourth of July holiday. When approaching swimmers, shut down the engines.
And don't forget bug spray! Greenhead horse flies bite humans.
“After that bite, you start to get that itch and you scratch all night, so yeah, it's a double-edged sword there,” he said.
The captain says you have to be weather aware, especially on a day like Monday when there is the potential of storms. If one of those cumulus clouds turns into a thunderstorm, lightning can reach far away from the storm's base.
And if you dock for food or drink, secure the boat tightly. Most importantly, have a designated driver.
Bohn also recommends bringing cellphone chargers, telling someone on land your float plan and allowing plenty of extra line and slack when you drop anchor.
He says following these simple rules will allow for a relaxing weekend - along with a few thousand people on the water.
