Nov. 3, 10:09 p.m.
New York State Sen. Andrew Gounardes issued the following statement after polls closed on Election Day:
“Here in Brooklyn and across the country, voters have made clear that they’re tired of Republican chaos and corruption, of pointless wars that make life more expensive, and of an affordability crisis that has put the American dream increasingly out of reach. They want a government that makes life easier by investing in the basics we actually need: universal child care, health care for all, affordable housing, and lower utility costs.
"That’s exactly the agenda I plan to fight for on behalf of New Yorkers. Doing this work is an immense privilege and a responsibility I take deeply seriously. I’m honored my neighbors have chosen me to represent them in Albany, and I’m excited to continue fighting alongside them for the New York we all deserve.”

Nov. 3, 10:02 p.m.
“Thank you to the great people of New York’s 9th Congressional District for entrusting me with an 11th term as our community’s federal representative in Washington, D.C. Brooklyn has always been, and will always be, my home. To serve the many decent, diverse, and spirited peoples of our borough, whom I am privileged to call my neighbors, is both a blessing and the honor of my life. When I return to the upcoming Congress, I pledge to continue the work of advancing our progressive agenda, standing firm against oppressive actions and regressive ideologies, and upholding the highest ideals of those who helped build Brooklyn into the beautiful, vibrant community we are proud to call home.”

After leading New York City in early voting, Brooklyn voters continue showing up at polling sites across the borough on Election Day, with turnout expected to increase throughout the evening.
According to the New York City Board of Elections, more than 437,000 voters checked in at polling locations across Brooklyn as of 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
For many voters, casting a ballot was about fulfilling a civic responsibility.
“I just think it’s the right thing to do,” said one Canarsie voter.
Voters said their decision to head to the polls was driven by issues affecting their everyday lives and communities. Several pointed to the importance of local races and the impact elected officials have on neighborhoods across the city.
“Sometimes they only think of the presidency and that's the only one that they should vote for,” said voter Roxanne Nora. “These are the ones that actually make a difference in your community itself.”
Pearletha Caristi said she wants to see change across all five boroughs.
“We need changes all over," said Caristi. "Not only in Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Queens, Manhattan. We need change all over. That's why we come out to vote.”
For Oswald Jones, concerns about the rising cost of living and public safety were among the factors motivating him to vote.
“The costs of living, crime, everything that is going on in this country right now. I'm hoping that things will change," says Jones.
Nora echoed the importance of participation, emphasizing that every vote matters.
“Each one of us voting makes a difference,” said Nora.
Polls remain open until 9 p.m. Voters who are in line by the closing time will still be allowed to cast their ballots.
