Democrat Darializa Avila Chevalier releases statement on projected NY-13 win

Nov. 4, 12:26 a.m.
“Tonight, we made history together. When we started this campaign, we were told this race was over before it began. We were told we should wait our turn.
“This win didn't come from lobbyists, corporate PACs, or political insiders. It came from our neighbors: the volunteers on the stoops and in the lobbies, the abuelas who fed our canvassers, the bodega owners who put our sign in the window, and everyone who gave what they could when rent was due.
"In my 14 years organizing in this district, I've had students come to me asking where they could find food and shelter. I've sat with people on the worst days of their lives and seen what happens when elected leaders fail them. I've fought to free our neighbors from ICE detention.
“That's why I ran — because our community deserves someone who will fight for us the same way we fight for each other. That’s also how I intend to govern.
“Housing for all. Investing in our babies, not bombs. A district where no family lives in fear of ICE. That's what we ran on, and we will not back down from it.
"To everyone who didn't vote for me: I am your representative too and I won’t take that responsibility lightly. This seat belongs to all of us.
"Winning tonight is not the finish line. Too many people get elected and disappear, but that is not what we built. This was always bigger than one congressional race. We will keep knocking doors, keep meeting in our community rooms, and bring this district's fights from our living rooms and corner stores to Washington.
“I am deeply honored by the trust my community has placed in me, and I look forward to bringing their voices into the halls of power. I will be a representative who governs with our community, not over it. Tomorrow morning, the real work starts.”

Comptroller Tom DiNapoli claims victory in a statement

Nov. 3, 10:13 p.m.
New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli declared victory Tuesday night in a statement, thanking supporters and public employees after holding a lead in the race. The Associated Press had not yet called the race.
DiNapoli's full statement:
"Tonight's victory is not just a personal victory for me. It's also a recognition of the outstanding efforts of the 3,000 dedicated professionals of the State Comptroller's office who do a great job on behalf of the people of New York. And it is a victory for the hard-working public employees, including our first responders, and our retirees who understand the importance of a secure pension. I thank all those who supported me with their votes, their endorsements, and their volunteer efforts, especially my friends in Labor, who powered tonight's great victory. The campaign is over but the work continues. I look forward to serving all the people of New York as your State Comptroller for the next four years."
Joseph Hernandez, the Republican nominee for State Comptroller, said he congratulated his opponent in a statement on Tuesday night.
"Tonight, I called Tom DiNapoli to congratulate him.
New Yorkers have spoken, and I respect their decision.
In 1776, George Washington lost New York. Seven years later, on Evacuation Day, he rode back down Broadway into a free city.
Losing a battle is not the same as losing the cause.
Our cause hasn't changed: every dollar Albany spends belongs to the people who earned it.
To my family, our volunteers, and every voter who trusted us: thank you.
I came here at seven on a fishing boat, and I learned that in America, you get back up.
This is not my last word."

Voters in NY-13 look for change as they choose next representative

Nov. 3, 5:20 p.m.
By Mike Lamorte
Voters in New York’s 13th Congressional District are heading to the polls to choose who will represent them in Washington. The historically blue district will have a new face after longtime Rep. Adriano Espaillat lost the Democratic primary to Darializa Avila Chevalier. Republican Jomo Manuel Williams is also on the ballot, with voters pointing to concerns about health care, mental health services and public safety as they make their decisions.
For Hannah Neequaye, getting older has made access to health care a growing concern.
“I’m getting old and things are happening to my body, you know? So that’s what my concern is," says Neequaye.
Adrianne Norwood says more resources are needed for people struggling with mental health.
“Just having programs for people who are struggling with mental health," says Norwood.
And for Rosa Pineda, it’s about feeling safe in her own neighborhood and making sure her children are protected.
“I need a change in the city. I needed more security for my kids in the streets," she says.

Voters streamed into the Mott Haven Community Center in the Bronx on Tuesday, with short lines forming inside at times. News 12 saw no major issues at the polling site during its visit.
“Easy, very easy,” one voter said when asked how the process went. Another said the people working at the site were “very cooperative.”
For voter Iris Aponte, the cost of everyday needs was on her mind as she cast her ballot.
“Things have to change,” Aponte said. “And things are really bad right now. Groceries, health care, child care — all that needs to be fixed.”

Race for new representative in the 13th Congressional District heads to voters

Voters across parts of the Bronx and Upper Manhattan are heading to the polls to decide who will represent New York’s 13th Congressional District, marking the first time in nearly a decade that the seat is open.
The contest pits Republican candidate Manuel Williams, an Army veteran, against Democratic Socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier. Avila Chevalier advanced to the general election after defeating five-term incumbent Congressman Adriano Espaillat in June’s Democratic primary, ending his long tenure representing the district.
At a polling site in Kingsbridge Heights, 25-year-old Steven Monje was eager to cast a ballot, arriving more than 30 minutes before the site opened.
“I’m more of an early bird, so I got to just do it as soon as possible,” Monje said.
When asked what issues matter most to him, Monje said his focus is on the community.
“Top of mind is people first. Anything that is helpful towards the community and the people is what matters most. Because at the end of the day, people is what creates the change,” he said.
Avila Chevalier, a Dominican-American activist, gained attention after unseating Espaillat in the Democratic primary. She was also one of three congressional candidates endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, with all three candidates winning their respective primaries.
Her Republican opponent, Manuel Williams, has kept a relatively low public profile throughout the campaign. According to his platform, Williams is a Harlem native and business owner who lives and works within the district.
Polling sites will remain open until 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
