Horrific video shows an SUV split in half after crashing into a tractor‑trailer Monday afternoon in Edison.
The crash happened at the intersection of New Durham and Talmadge Roads. Video provided to News 12 by Fresh Mart Edison shows the SUV quickly approaching the tractor‑trailer as it makes a left turn onto Talmadge Road outside the store.
A 77-year-old woman from Metuchen was killed in the six-vehicle crash that investigators believe may have been caused by a medical episode, authorities said.
Police responded at approximately 2:45 p.m., according to the Edison Police Department.
Preliminary findings indicate a 2016 Buick Enclave was traveling eastbound on New Durham Road when it left the roadway at a high rate of speed. According to police, the vehicle became airborne, entered Talmadge Road and collided with a flatbed tractor-trailer traveling there at the time of the crash.
The Buick traveled underneath the trailer, sustaining catastrophic damage. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 3:24 p.m., police said.
The impact pushed the tractor-trailer into four additional vehicles, causing secondary crashes. One driver was taken to JFK Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of minor head and leg injuries, police said. No other serious injuries were reported.
Based on evidence gathered at the scene, investigators believe a medical event may have contributed to the Buick driver losing control. The crash does not appear to be criminal in nature, and no charges are anticipated at this time, officials said.
