Thousands of people are now in New Jersey after leaving Florida to escape Hurricane Milton.
Wednesday was the last day to leave the Sunshine State as the hurricane is expected to make landfall Wednesday night.
There were not too many travelers arriving in New Jersey Tuesday afternoon because many of them have already arrived. Many people rushed to get out of Milton’s path once they heard how bad it was expected to be.
There were some flights coming in from Fort Lauderdale Tuesday afternoon. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was the closest airport for a lot of people that was not yet closed.
Tampa International Airport stopped all fights Tuesday morning. Orlando International Airport shut down operations Wednesday morning.
The flight board at Newark Liberty Intentional Airport showed that some flights from Fort Meyers, Key Wat and Sarasota were canceled.
"We are from Hoboken, and we were vacationing in Key West. The flight and the airport were getting closed, so we had to fly out of Fort Lauderdale to avoid the storm,” says traveler Tim Gill.
"Kinda nervous because I grew up in the islands. I grew up with hurricanes and stuff like that, so I was like, ‘Oh no, I don’t want to go through that again. So, I kind of had to get the first flight out,” says traveler Marcya Drigo.
Airlines have sent out alerts and rebooking options to avoid people traveling into and out of Florida.
