It will be even colder overnight down into the mid- to upper-40s with a persistent breeze of 10 to 20 mph. It will feel quite cold, more like November than October. Have the heavier jackets for the morning commute and for the potential northern lights.
Currently, a G4 geomagnetic storm, a major X-class solar flare and coronal mass ejection is reaching Earth tonight, opening up the opportunity to see the northern lights across the northeast United States, possibly even in the city with all the light pollution. A camera (smartphone works) with night mode-long exposure and a clear view to the north with no buildings or trees is advisable for taking photos of the northern lights. The best chance will be before 2 a.m. and naked eye visibility remains very low but not impossible.
There could be disruptions to cellular service and GPS navigation, both self-resolving in a few minutes. Power outages and other related issues are not expected as the geomagnetic storm watch issued a few days ago helped companies prepare and protect their systems.
After a cold start Friday, plenty of sun will begin a major but brief warmup. Temperatures will approach 70 degrees by the afternoon, then near 80 degrees by Saturday afternoon. The warmup ends there as it gets colder on Sunday.
A storm is expected to be close by on Monday, but most of the day looks dry as of Thursday night. Even colder air moves in behind the storm for Tuesday and midweek next week. Highs will struggle to reach 50 degrees, and lows will dip to near 40 degrees, feeling more like early December next week.
