A man is dead after an exchange of gunfire with a Jersey City police officer near Ege and Bergen avenues late Monday night.
Members of the Jersey City Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit say they saw the individual acting suspiciously and noticed a bulge in his clothing that appeared to be a possible firearm.
When officers approached, the man opened fire on a JCPD officer. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect was later pronounced dead at the hospital. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The Jersey City Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office secured the area.
The investigation is now being handled by the Attorney General’s Office, as per protocol.
