As part of National Diaper Need Awareness Week, Allied Foundation Diaper Bank hosted a diaper giveaway in Mastic for Long Island families.
Organizers say one in two families with young children in the United States struggle to afford diapers for their newborns and infants.
They say the need for diapers and other infant necessities like formula have become increasingly difficult for local families because of rising inflation.
Johanna Alvarenga says she spend $120 a week on diapers for her 5-month-old daughter.
"You have to budget yourself, it's a struggle you have to look for programs. When you find something, it's good, it helps a lot," says Alvarenga.
Since 2019, Allied Foundation Diaper Bank has distributed more than 3,000,000 diapers to families across Long Island.
