WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The first major winter storm of the season has a little bit of everything coming into the Hudson Valley.
It will approach the region overnight tonight into Tuesday. Expect snow to start falling between 4-6 AM, starting in our western counties and then moving east. As the morning hours progress, temperatures will start to get milder. This will allow a change over to a wintry mix then rain for areas closer to the coast, such as Westchester, Rockland and Putnam Counties. Westchester will see cold rain fall through the midday to early afternoon hours. Rockland and Putnam Counties will see a mix of rain and snow come as temps will be in the low 30s. To the north and west is where all snow will fall down for Dutchess, Orange, Ulster & Sullivan Counties. Snow totals will be in the 3-6" range with some isolated 7" or more for Dutchess, Orange, Ulster & Sullivan Counties where a winter storm watch is in effect. A winter weather advisory is in effect for Rockland and Putnam Counties, where the lower totals and the mix of snow to rain will be expected. Westchester County is not under any alerts, at least not just yet, as the county will see the bulk of the precipitation fall as cold rain.
After the storm leaves the region by the tail end of the Tuesday PM Rush, use that time to clean off cars, salt/de-ice roadways/walkways and brush snow from lower tree branches.
That is because colder temps will move in for Wednesday morning, freezing/hardening any lingering moisture in the region. This could create black ice and slick spots all over. Also, trying to shovel snow will be harder as it will be heavier to handle.
By Friday, a big drop in temps will come into the region. Temperatures could feel into the teens in the morning hours and twenties in the afternoon hours.
Next weekend could see a few more systems swing into the region. The one on Saturday may take advantage of the frigid Friday temps and bring snow to the area.
For the day today, it is a dry one with mostly sunny skies and temperatures running into the low 40s. That is colder than the average high for this time of the year of 47 degrees.
