In the wake of this morning's wintry and wet mess, warmer air is overspreading the region. The result will be areas of patchy dense fog. There could be some cold air trapped in low-lying valleys and that would lead to icy patches developing. Otherwise, partly cloudy and coolish weather awaits us for the remainder of the overnight.
Friday looks fantastic. Sunny and seasonable. Daytime highs reach for the low- to mid-40s. A very pleasant end to the work/ school week. Gives us time to get ready for the next round of wintry weather that is coming for the weekend.
Clouds will collect late Friday night through Saturday morning. Another storm will overrun the area by Saturday afternoon and evening. This go-around looks to have a little more snow, and possibly more ice. As a result of the incoming storm, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for parts of New Jersey already.
The amount of ice that accrues will be determined by where the storm tracks. The latest guidance suggests Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset and Hunterdon counties could see 0.10 to as much as 0.50 inches of glaze over everything. A very troubling scenario if it pans out. That type of ice will weigh down on power lines and branches causing outages and property damage.
Snow along and north of Interstate 78 will collect and collect quickly. At the height of the storm, 9 p.m. through 1 a.m. Sunday, snow rates could be as high as 1 inch per hour. Roads will become slippery very fast.
The storm tapers around daybreak on Sunday and cleanup can begin so everyone can safely get to wherever they are going on Super Bowl Sunday.
Next week has many questions surrounding the timing and how impactful the next weather system will be. We are seeing model consistency that suggests a storm with plowable snow Tuesday into Wednesday.
