2ds agoA local catholic elementary school in Jersey City is closing this month.
The Archdiocese of Newark announced St. Nicholas Catholic School in The Heights section of Jersey City won't reopen when the school year starts in September. The school serves students in grades pre-K to grade 8.
School enrollment declined by 30% from September 2021 to June 2024, according to an announcement posted on the school’s website. The decision to permanently close the school was made after careful review of numerous factors, the website announcement says, including declining enrollment, increasing fiscal challenges related to the operation of the school, and teaching staff vacancies.
A spokesperson for the school said in part, “It became clear that remaining open was neither feasible nor responsible.”
The Diocese will provide tuition assistance to families whose kids now have to transfer to a more expensive school.
St. Nicholas Catholic School will remain operational until Aug. 31.
