A fourth grade teacher at P.S. 21 in Wakefield is accused of abusing one of her students.
News 12 spoke exclusively with Prince Wane Matthews and his mom Victoria Collazo. The pair said the teacher started screaming at Prince consistently after he got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Prince needs to check his blood sugar and go to the bathroom frequently. His mom said the teacher can’t handle his needs and is lashing out. She told her son to put his phone in his pocket and press record.
Prince captured jarring audio of his teacher yelling at him repeatedly while he says, “can you please stop screaming at me.”
Prince said his teacher then grabbed his phone from him and grabbed his arm, leaving a red mark that turned into a bruise.
“My whole life revolves around taking care of him. So for me to have to send him somewhere and to know that they didn't take care of him, I'm not letting him out of my sight,” said Collazo.
Prince hasn’t been to school in over a week, and he and his mother don’t want him to return to that school. They’re calling for the teacher to be removed and evaluated.
The Department of Education responded to News 12 with the following statement: “"The safety and wellbeing of our students is our very top priority. This alleged behavior is unacceptable, and an investigation is underway. In addition, school and district leadership are working with this family to provide the resources and support they need."
