Residents on Rosedale Avenue in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx say stolen car wheels have become more common recently.
News 12 visited the area and saw at least one Toyota Camry held up by a cement block, with all four wheels gone.
“I’ve lived in this neighborhood for a very long time,” said Garry Galbraith. “I’ve never seen it like this before. To wake up in the morning to come out and see your car on the ground—it’s tasteless and it’s disrespectful.”
People like Alberto Feliz, a former mechanic and now driving instructor, finds himself posting one damaged car a day on his social media.
“This is typical,” said Feliz. “This is something that’s been happening all over the Bronx from top to bottom. This could be a mom taking her kid to school.”
Drivers say parking prices at a nearby garage does not help lessen the risk of their car being next.
“The parking is $20 a day,” said one resident who was a victim of a car break-in. “For a whole month, my truck is $300. For regular cars, $250. So, nobody can really afford that. So you got to take your chances and park on the street.”
“I’ve been living here for 15 to 20 years,” said Feliz. “It’s sad that we have to live like this.”
Although not fully theft proof, buying wheel locks and installing an alarm system with wheel sensors are some of the best options to protect wheels.
