There are still some issues with the water flowing from taps following a major water main break in Union Township nearly a week ago.
That water main along Morris Avenue (Route 82) was repaired on Saturday, yet some people are complaining of a chemical or chlorine-type of odor or taste to the tap water in neighborhoods just blocks away from the water main break.
Fresh asphalt was poured and rolled over Morris Avenue. Officials said the road was expected to be open sometime after 10 p.m. Friday.
Nearby, Applebee’s, Lowes and the other businesses within the shopping plaza all have their water restored, as do nearby homes where some are having taste and odor issues.
"Customers may continue to notice an odor over the next several days. We've tested over 200 compounds across 49 sample sites, from the source to tap," said New Jersey American Water.
The utility says that testing shows no public safety risk.
Even the state Department of Environmental Protection has joined in.
"Despite continuing taste and odor concerns, we have not found any exceedance of our state or federal drinking water quality standards,” says Commissioner Shawn LaTourette.
Not everyone is experiencing the foul-smelling water.
Massimo Clemente lives less than a mile from the break.
“A little different taste, not bad. Something is a little different, I don’t know what it is,” Clemente says.
The DEP says it has traced the changes in smell and tease of the water to a leak from a repackaging facility in Branchburg. The facility repackages fragrances, essential oils and flavoring.
The DEP and American Water say the drinking water meets state and federal standings and does not pose a public health risk.
