The busy holiday rush is here, and people are expected to travel in record numbers over the coming days.
AAA projects 119 million people will travel 50 miles from home or more between Saturday, Dec. 21 and Jan. 1.
Of those, 107 million people are expected to drive.
AAA adds that 3 million more people are traveling this holiday season compared to last year.
Drivers had mixed reactions about hitting the roads.
“It’s real cold,” said Rashid Cooper, of Harlem. “The road’s going to be a little icy, black ice, stuff like that. You always have to worry about stuff like that, but we’re still going to drive. We’re still going to go where we got to go.”
“Only problem is on the highways because lots of people are going out [of town],” said Monjur Khalique, a taxi driver. “The city’s a little empty.”
“There’s always traffic in New York City,” said Blanca Lluesma, of Flatbush. “It took me an hour and a half just to get [to Soundview] from Brooklyn.”
As for gas prices, drivers told News 12 that it could be worse.
As of Dec. 23, AAA said the national average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.04.
It was a little higher in New York - at $3.12 - but that was down $0.27 compared to this time last year.
