Some lucky students at St. Ann Academy in Bridgeport will be getting their own chess sets on Monday – donated by DIG Chess, a group that provides free lessons to kids in Connecticut.
The DIG Chess Team was founded by Dan Starbuck Pelletier and Jithu Sajeevan.
"We match every paid lesson with a free lesson for a kid in economic need," said Pelletier.
For the past five years, they have been providing free lessons to students at St. Ann’s. In the spirit of the holiday season, they collected over 200 chess sets to be donated.
"Each of these [sets] are either a DIG kid just bringing one or two or another chess club like the New Britain Chess Club giving 20,” said Pelletier.
He says a club in Manhattan donated 100 chess sets for the cause.
"I think they're going to be so excited and so shocked that we're actually able to bring all these chess boards," said Sajeevan.
Pelletier and Sajeevan will dress up as Santa and Buddy the Elf to surprise the students with the donated chess sets.
