Shocking new video of a 5-year-old struck by a taxicab in Rockland County while riding his bicycle is once again spotlighting concerns about pedestrian and bicyclist safety after several recent similar incidents in the town of Ramapo.
The frightened child is seen on the surveillance video obtained by News 12 as he’s struck and thrown into the air by the car and then dragged several feet. The child then hobbles to a nearby driveway and collapses. Several people are seen rushing over to aid the child, who was wearing a helmet, before the clip ends.
The video was initially shared by a Rockland-based Instagram page last week.
After two days of calls to police and sources to find out more, News 12 traced the incident to Elener Lane in Spring Valley and learned from neighbors that the boy lives around the corner.
News 12 spoke to the child’s mother by phone. She says she's not sure why the video recently surfaced but that the accident happened two years ago and her son, who suffered minor injuries, survived.
“He’s OK, but it’s a miracle because he was hit really badly,” says the woman.
News 12 has reported on an alarming number of similar incidents in the town of Ramapo since 2024, including children hit and killed by school buses and pedestrians and bicyclists killed or seriously injured by cars.
In April, a 55-year-old man was hit by a van in Monsey.
As for this incident, the victim’s mother says it shows why more sidewalks are needed and hopes it’s a reminder for drivers to slow down.
“They’re playing on their bikes outside. I’m not saying they should be on the road because they shouldn’t but there are no sidewalks, so drivers do need to know to be careful,” the woman says.
News 12 is told the driver stayed on the scene, but it’s not clear if they were ticketed or charged with any wrongdoing.
News 12 has calls out to Spring Valley police for more information.
