Tuesday marked the first senior Field Day for residents at Riverspring Living in the Bronx.
Riverspring Living provides supportive housing for medically vulnerable and formerly homeless seniors.
"Research shows social isolation, once you reach the age of 55 and older people tend to socially isolate," said Riverspring Living program coordinator Shareen Labeau. "So what we do is we'll call them physically go knock on their day, encourage them to get out!"
It was a chance to get out of their neighborhood.
There's a lot of shooting in the area so people are scared, 4 p.m., 5 p.m., I go inside and don't come outside," said resident Trevor Johnson.
And have a good time with a barbecue.
"Hamburgers, franks, shish kabob, pork ribs, they have potatoes, macaroni and cheese, I mean they have a plethora of food and it is good because it was catered," said resident Arthur Patterson.
There was music and games, too.
"My doctor told me 'everything, you try try not to break anything,' I break a bone, that's it!" said resident Nida King.
About 100 residents came out to enjoy.
"This brings them all together in the hopes of giving them something to do and make them active as well," said Labeau.
And residents tell say it keeps them young.
"Just enjoying this, this is an honor," added Johnson.
