At least three firefighters were injured following a massive fire at a commercial building Monday night in Port Morris.
According to the FDNY, firefighters responded to East 136th Street between Willow and Walnut avenues for a fire that was spreading quickly. Multiple firefighters were hurt while battling the heavy smoke and flames.
Fire officials say the fire caused the roof to partially collapse. People who live in a nearby building had to evacuate because of the smoke.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire. The fire chief tells News 12 the injured firefighters were taken to the hospital.
Meanwhile, neighboring shops say they luckily went unharmed.
“That’s terrible, that's terrible, thinking that these guys put their lives on the line everyday to protect us, and our businesses, and our homes,” says Christopher Hay, a nearby business owner.
Officials spent hours investigating the scene. One officer called the area a crime scene.
