A Rockland County man is facing multiple charges after police say he was found drunk behind the wheel of a taxi cab with a minor inside Friday morning.
Ramapo police arrested 24‑year‑old Anderson Benitez‑Morales, of Montebello, at a strip mall off Route 59 in Airmont around 7:30 a.m. According to the police department, an officer first spotted Benitez‑Morales and a passenger “passed out inside a taxi.”
When the officer attempted to speak with him, police say Benitez‑Morales put the vehicle in drive and tried to go over a curb toward the roadway. Officers were able to stop him and take him into custody.
Police say the passenger was 15 years old. They are not identifying the teen or explaining the relationship between the two because of the passenger’s age.
Benitez‑Morales is charged with driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law because a minor was in the vehicle. He is also charged with aggravated unlicensed operation due to six previous license suspensions on two separate occasions, along with endangering the welfare of a child, and obstructing governmental administration.
The taxi seen in photos taken by police displayed the logo of Continental Taxi. The company said the name of the man arrested does not match the registered driver in their records with that vehicle, and their driver was not "on the clock" at the time of the incident. The company also said it does not yet know the relationship between the registered driver and Benitez‑Morales, but confirmed the taxi will no longer be part of its operation.
They say that drivers are independent contractors and warn them about their strict policy on incidents, insisting they take safety seriously.
At this time, it's unclear whether the Montebello man is actually a taxi driver.
Benitez‑Morales was released on his own recognizance at the Airmont Justice Court. He is scheduled to return to court on April 16.
