After months of waiting, the Red Hook Pool is finally reopening this Sunday, much to the delight of the local community.
Water is back in the Olympic-size pool after a broken pipe forced it to shut down before the start of the summer season.
“We’re so happy it’s going to open,” said a Karen Blondel, president of the Red Hook Houses Tenant Association, at a rally on Friday. “It’s been very disappointing not to have a pool for the children of Red Hook.”
Advocates and elected officials praised the Parks Department for acting quickly to reopen the pool.
The Red Hook Pool and the adjacent Sol Goldman Recreation Center are also slated for a $122 million renovation, currently in the design phase, with construction expected to begin in 2028.
Residents are encouraged to provide input on the project before work begins.
The pool will officially reopen this Sunday, giving residents a chance to enjoy the last three weekends of the season.
