The death of a school crossing guard in Poughkeepsie is prompting city leaders and district officials to consider safety improvements near Smith Elementary School.

On Monday, 72-year-old James Montanino was hit by a car while helping students cross a busy three-lane road.

Officials say long-term changes could include lowering the speed limit and adding traffic lights. The city also plans to install new traffic signs and increase officer presence during school hours.

"Of course we don't have the bandwidth to do it every day throughout the school year," said Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers. "But between our traffic officers and also our police department, they will work with them in any area where there might be some safety concerns."

Extra counselors are being provided for students and staff affected by Montanino's death.
