A police officer shot an armed individual after responding to a mental health commitment order involving an emotionally disturbed person Thursday night in Mount Vernon.

The Mount Vernon Police Department says officers arrived at the residence near Columbus Avenue and East 4th Street around 9 p.m. The individual refused to comply with a court order to be taken into custody.

Officers used non-lethal tools but were unsuccessful as he barricaded himself inside the apartment. Hostage negotiators used deescalation techniques for several hours.

After negation efforts were exhausted and the man began making threats of self-harm, officers obtained a warrant to enter the apartment.

Police say the armed man continued to pose an imminent threat, resulting in an officer opening fire. The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

New York State Police is handling the investigation, in accordance with protocol for all officer-involved shootings.
