The 39th annual swim across the Sound is tomorrow with the first ever start and finish in Bridgeport. The proceeds benefit cancer patients and their families. News 12 Connecticut's Mark Sudall is at the Steel Point Harbor in Bridgeport with a preview in this week's Main Street, Connecticut. They have beautiful weather for this, Mark. Oh, it is beautiful. The water is just so calm. Yeah, the 14 mile swim starts here tomorrow morning at 6 a.m., ends at Captain's Cove. First time is going to be along the coast here instead of going to Long Island. All right, well, I want to introduce you to Amy Norr with Hartford Healthcare Special Events. Thank you so much for being with us this morning. Good to see you. Uh, so tell me a little bit about, um, We know that the event proceeds benefit cancer patients. What does some of that cover? So all the money that's raised goes directly to cancer patients regardless of where they receive treatment. We pay their rent, their utilities, car payments. We also do some type of care, yoga. We do. Massage a cold cap, which is for women so they don't lose their hair. It's a great program that we run here now. I don't have to tell you, in 39 years now this has become such a community event. Tell me about that. It's a huge community event. Normally we go from Fort Jefferson, New York to Connecticut. Unfortunately. Sanford's marina had some damage over the winter due to ice, but Steel Point Harbor here has been gracious, very helpful, allowing us to house all our boats here on Friday and Saturday. The city of Bridgeport had gone above and beyond to allow us to have this event 100% in Connecticut, 100% in Bridgeport. So we are starting here at Steel Point Harbor tomorrow, Saturday morning. All the boats and swimmers will leave from here. We're going to swim out 14 miles, turn and come back into Captain's Cove for a wonderful celebration. Everyone is welcome to come down to the cove anytime, probably between about 1 and 6. The swimmers will be coming in. Yes, it's a long, it's certainly a long day for sure. It's a long day, but it's a great day. It's a very emotional day. A lot of people are swimming for someone. In memory of someone in honor of someone who has cancer, like I said, this is a great event. Last year we raised about $790,000. All of that money goes again to cancer patients that cover things insurance won't cover. When you get sick, you know, you don't realize that you're not able to work and you're maybe not getting a paycheck, and we've helped a lot of people. For example, we helped a young woman, 32 years old, just married, and was diagnosed with breast cancer and then found out her husband. He was laid off from his job, so they reached out through their nurse navigator, and we were able to provide payments for them through her treatments and actually she is now giving back to the swim. She's she's better and she's working again and her husband has a job and it's just amazing. People really give back to this community. Amy, thank you so much for the time.
